Mengawali tahun 2013 ini, Sony membuat gebrakan baru dnegan merilis dua ponsel Android Quad Core andalannya yakni Xperia Z dan Xperia ZL. Xperia ZL, versi ini bisa dibilang saudara dari Xperia Z, namun punya spesifikasi yang sedikit lebih rendah. Xperia ZL juga memiliki layar 5 inci TFT Reality Display yang ditenagai Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2. Prosesor dan kamera utama yang digunakan Xperia ZL juga sama dengan Xperia Z, yakni Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core 1,5 GHz seperti yang dipakai di Nexus 4 dan 13MP dengan sensor Exmor RS.
Bedanya, Xperia ZL tidak memiliki sertifikasi IP57, yang artinya tidak tahan debu maupun air. Uniknya, kamera depannya ditempatkan di pojok kanan bawah panel. Selain itu, body sedikit lebih berat dari Xperia Z.
Sistem operasi yang digunakan Xperia ZL sama dengan Z. Sony Xperia Z dan ZL akan tersedia di pasar yang berbeda. Baterainya juga berjenis non-removable 2.370 mAh.
